yard sale…

found among
the archeological items
ceremonial clothing
as well as
personal adornments
adjacent to these artifacts
were
cooking utensils
and
an assortment
of
decorative statues
some
obviously used
in
religious rituals
below
a strata
of
old news papers
collections
of
leather bound
images
sorted by stages
of
life
other images
were
string tied bundles
that were
incongruent
with
the bound images
often
portraying events
which seemed
to predate
this particular tribal unit
perhaps
the forefathers
regardless
none were
remarkable
in determining
the tribe’s past life
or
culture
however
the assemblage
was
quite amazing
but
there was one
diagnostic artifact
that
captured my attention
leaving me
spellbound
and

speechless
a photograph
of
you

yard sale…

i had planned
on
calling you
this evening
but
your line
was
disconnected
my inquiry
to the phone company
indicated
you’ve
left town
sorry
i missed
your yard sale
i
would have loved
to have
my
things back
but
i’m certain
it was
just
an oversight
on your part
and not
the
resentment
you have
that
i
have
a
life

my neighbor…

fragrant whiffs of music
from his yard sale saxophone
caught a breeze
and sailed across the field
to call me one last time
before he heads back
for final conversations
with family and friends
afraid of being alone
when his voice
is the only one
to be heard
now he says
he’s got no children
something the first wife said to them
made them feel unwelcomed
even when the welcome mat was out
so now he’s tired of trying
to have conversations
when no one’s listening
better to just pack up
and head home
before
more
snow
comes

no not lately…

i got this old record
an edison
years ago
at a yard sale
back then
folks sold stuff
they didn’t need anymore
not because it was necessary
just to feed their families
it’s really quite interesting
you see to play it
you have to crank
the record player by hand
no electronic wizardry here
nor electric companies
trying to convince you that
voter’s rights are in danger
if local governments own
electric companies
no
just physical force from a machine
with a steel needle digging deep into the grooves
applying strong force to make it play
as it was initially presented
much like what you have to do
with the folks in government
just to hear something that resembles
a true recording of facts
oh sure
it’s got a lot of scratches
when it does play
and every now and then it skips
a beat or two
but it plays a hell of a lot truer
than the political promises
i’ve heard
