a jade framed mirror….

as i passed my mirror
i would have sworn
i saw the reflection of a unicorn
perhaps the last unicorn
but i can’t be sure
for just as i turned
the  lights went out
leaving only slivers of moonlight
peering through the darkness
but i wondered
could this vision be true
am i the last unicorn
a hapless man on two feet
a unicorn
     a partaker of life’s nectar
     breathing in love’s passion
     while wading through
the cold waters of yesterday’s dreams
feeling the shifting sands of today
     beneath my feet
a unicorn
     a dying breed
     caught in brambles
     of despair
     unable to move
     for fear of death
no
there must be others
dreamers and lovers
who believe
that this life
is much more
than a reflection
in a mirror

but what can i do…

the sand of the sahara
fears no man
nor pay homage
to graven images
on walls of up-scale malls
nor will it listen to your
whimper of
but what can i do
for it is the undefeated army
that marches on your cities
and villages
salting not only the earth of carthage
but every parcel of land in its wake
and it shall not stop
until you wake from your sleep
and see that one man is never alone
there is always another
standing in the shadow of fear
hidden from your view
within the ancient ruins
of political rhetoric
but you
you
do not hear
the timeless voices of the desert spirits
imploring you to listen
to see the vision of the future
when all that you will know
will be sand
sand
holding the ashes
of every conqueror of this land
and every dreamer
who chose
not
to
act

shipwrecked…

half awake i wander through my day
sometimes dreaming
sometimes fearing
the corners of my own thoughts
as if there were some evil there
(it’s just a childish nightmare…)
all i ‘ve sought was love
not always that with passion
but that love which is willing to give
not decreed to be given
by some collared representative of god
(it’s just a childish wish…)
my body seems formless one moment
caught in a repeating nightmare
floating with only the sound of my heart beat
then vibrant like the sound
a morning sunrise should make
alive with all the  wonders of life
like a child seeing his first parade
(it’s just a childish vision…)
i’m caught in this cycle
i ‘m the board which holds the anchor of the ship
and although the rest of the ship is gone
i am bound to these shores
crashing upon the rocks at low tide
and floating freely in the waves at high tide
(it’s just a childish sensation…)
soon the sea will rust these chains
and i shall float freely
without being held to these shores
till then
i must hold fast to what can be
and live with what is
and wander with the ebb and flow
that has brought me to these shores
(it is just the fate of men…)
