national wear a keffiyeh day…

freedom fighter

the brown bag prophet
stopped me
and asked
where’s
your
keffiyeh
taken aback
i said
well
i don’t
have one
he said
why not
well
why would i
was
my reply
he said
today’s
national keffyeh day
and
everyone
who gives
a damn
about freedom
is supposed
to
wear one
well
or
a sombrero
or
any
outward symbol
of
resistance
to the racist policies
of
the new
social bullies
in
washington
it’s
a more
polite way
of
raising
your
middle
finger

hate’s history repeats…

hates-history-repeats

racial purity
a repeated theme of hate
now in my own land

now in my own land
i hear calls for legalized
racial purity

racial purity
national safety it’s mask
now in my own land

quick draw contest…

aunt bea
pulled out an old photo
of me
all decked out
as a cowboy
complete with
a genuine cowhide
double holster
holding white
simulated
pearl
handled pistols
she
said
as i recall
you
and
your cousins
were into
tv westerns
gun smoke
hopalong cassidy
and
such
you boys
would stand out front
practicing your quick draws
producing enough noise
from those cap guns
to send
the neighborhood dogs
into a barking
frenzy
back then
you didn’t
consider
the real consequences
of carrying out
a quick draw contest
with others
how death
was the real winner
seems like
the new administration
hasn’t quite
realized
that yet
or
doesn’t care

political bedfellows…

political-bedfellows

our bed is empty when you are there
death’s black coldness grasp even our souls as you approach

a rigid aggregate structure…

seeing
that
the brown bag prophet
had
several cans
of
spray paint
in
a cloth carrying bag
i jokingly
said
so you’ve
become
a graffiti artist
now
oh no
he said
i’ve
just returned
from
the mexican border
i was painting
welcome signs
on the wall
and
planting
a few
blue vining roses
actually
he said
i do not mind
staring
at
border walls
for
they serve
no
true purpose
but to
appear
to
masculate
the feeblest
of fears
of
more concern
to me
are
the invisible walls
of
ignorance
that
fostered
their
construction
