heard those songs
as a child
usually accompanied
on
an out of tune piano
back then
no one noticed
the dissonance
perhaps
true faith
was
rendered
in choir voices
which
made
everything sound
wonderful
a little
of
that
water into wine thing
years ago
much
of life
was
like that
faith
and
youth
combined
to create
beauty
and
happiness
from
an out of tuned world
now days
choirs
have soundmen
and
music performers
with
electronic tuners
attached
to their gear
a real band
with
drummers
mimicking
throbbing heart beats
to which
well dressed singers
carry out choreographed
dance routines
not to say
that some things
weren’t choreographed
before
just seemed less
commercial
no t-shirts
or
cds
for sale
no
back then
it
was all designed
to
get the best possible
offering
from the congregation
to keep
the lights on
hard to sing
when you’re cold
and
can’t see the hymnals
as i recall
there were a few times
when
folks didn’t take off
their winter coats
during services
you might
think of that as
a subtle message
from
the divine
about
the congregation’s levels
of
tithing
in any case
if
you happen
to
find yourself
in
a place of worship
one of these days
you might
want
to do
a little
comparing
yourself
