in the harbor
a black ship
sails toward shore
the new land

below the decks
crimson warriors
satan’s own
wearing crosses of white
we see them come ashore
so many men
with strange dress
metal arms and heads
weapons that flash
like thunder
killing without a single
blow of the axe
elders tell us to flee
but we the young eagles
say we shall fight
for our sacred ground
for freedom
for all that the gods
have given us
rocks burst open
the blood of our nation
pours from each stone
of the village
flames consume
the living
and the dead
waves of fear
cover all who stand
before these beasts
our gods
have forsaken us
our gold
our freedom
our land

This poem represents my fourth response to  the third challenge series between Jade and I.  This challenge is somewhat different in that the prompt is now an audio prompt.  Each poet provides the other with five instrumental songs (so that the song’s words do not interefere with the poet’s) from which the poet is to write a poem.  Jade has written her first response which can be found here

and the unicorns shall come down with them….

From Constant's Theodora

once the unicorns
roamed these lands
and created the thunder without rain
but there was a kingdom
where every king was
and buried with
a crown inlaid with the magical pearl
of a unicorn’s horn
it was the king’s birthright
the unicorn’s great strength
and independence
made for a fine image for a new king
but their numbers began to dwindle
some were hunted just for sport
others for human fuel
burning as the finest of oils
the horns were tossed aside
and buried
so as not to challenge the king’s power
but soon their numbers
were few
and finally one remained
so when the new king
was crowned
the ground was soaked
with its blood
and the last
was gone
it was his birthright
you see

will the circle be unbroken…

i am so mad
i could spit
there i was
on the line with the one
divine being
don’t even
to ask me for a formal name
like Mohammed, Christ, etc.
or whether it’s a
he or she
there was this mention of
personal plagues
for revealing
heavenly secrets
so don’t even go there
as i was saying
there i was
well actually it was a conference call
with several other folks on the line
but that’s not important
i was the one
on the line
not pastor brown
but anyway
not to boast
or anything
i had just asked this question
’bout what was the true religion
well all hell broke out then
there were folks saying
it’s mine
no it’s mine
it was just like listening
to a group of kindergarten children
arguing over a dead bug
one person claimed
the church was like a pot bellied stove
you had to attend to keep
the fires burning
another said the church was everywhere
cause god was everywhere
so there wasn’t any reason
to hang out with a bunch of hypocrites
then child
some fools
chimes in
that god was on his side for war
of course
someone else called him a name
that I can’t repeat right now
but let’s just say
that they are no longer among us
on this earth for
that little outburst
so then without warning
someone begins
to talk about religion
and politics
oh child
if you could’ve heard
the thunder at that point
you would know
on any given day
to make the connection
but the words were spoken
and the answer was quite clear
just give me a minute
oh yes
something about
render to Caesar
i just can’t remember right now
that was
followed by something
to do with
oh yes
how there was only one way to truth
and then
all i heard
you never heard what i said
you’ve created a shopping mall
for religion
so you can
pick and choose
what you want
rather than
do what
then honey
the line

and again…

tho we never chose
              to lose
it just seems to come
              our way
and again we see our dreams
caught within the storm
where once they flew in clear skies
now they’re tossed and blown
              and again
the cold rain
soaks the wrappings of our dreams
chilling them until they shutter
              and again
the thunder warns
that the storm has just begun
the thunder seems to drone
              and again
                      and again
                              and again…
