like some senators…

like some senators2

noticed quickly
seats
carefully rearranged
filling in
the blank spot
left
by a departure
but
everyone stood
none
of the guests
spoke a word
confused
by
the obvious
where
to sit
everyone
had assigned seats before
claiming a new spot
without guidelines
required
realignment
of
their thinking
asserting their beliefs
about
their position
in
life
what if someone
disapproved
of their selection
might that not lead
to another departure
perhaps
their own
might it best be
to just stand
swaying back and forth

the brown bag prophet

said
you’re
college educated
as i recall
no doubt
you’ve read
about people
like me
you know
the homeless
street vagabond
who’s
lost
his morals
and
social compass
a drain
on society’s wealth
unlike
welfare recipient farmers
or
corporate prostitute senators
who divvy up
death benefits
of fallen warriors
while their
financial backers
the clairvoyant
inside traders
rape
retirement accounts
but
putting aside
those upstanding
citizens
tell me
this
why is it
that
everyone
can speak
for me
but
no one
can listen
to me
