demons get their wings
every time there’s a murder
could be a bomb
or just a mass school shooting 
doesn’t matter as long as
they are innocent young souls

buried beneath
the rubble of political rhetoric
children
dying
in
the cancerous womb
of
ambition
and
greed
let the record show
as the children
cried out for help
and their bodies
were ripped apart
by assault weapons
only
self-serving words
were heard
from
washington’s marble halls
let the record show
those
who have sworn
to
serve
the nation’s people
selflessly
no longer wear
the nation’s flag
upon their lapel
but
weapons
used to kill
our children
proclaiming
the nation is second
to their quest for power
let the record show
their desire for power
is so strong
they are
willing
to devour
the entrails
of
children
born and unborn
let the record show

 

 

diversionary tactic…

the numbers we use
can conceal horrific facts
like deaths per thousand
but it’s different if we say
a child is shot every hour
in this right to life nation

 

 

insufficient for purpose…

ain’t got
no fancy
iambic pentameter
to wrap around
my words
nor
sweet rhythms
to conceal
the crimes
of our time
no metaphors
for the sounds
of bullets
ripping
the flesh
of children
huddled with fear
in their classrooms
can’t find
an anonomatopoeia way
to say
the gun lobby
is french kissing
dollars
into the mouths
of senators
so they’ll
turn a blind eye
to the streets and classrooms
flowing
with innocent blood
but they ain’t
the only ones
refusing to see
that racism
defines this nation
and perhaps
the entire white world
for tears are shed
when ukrainian children die
but not even a sigh
is heard
when children starve
to death
in africa and bangladesh
or
children are struck down
by an israeli drone
there’s no fixed meter
that can convey
the absolute sadness
of parents
with their child’s death
no poet can ever
capture the emotions
for such an event
we merely stutter
our thoughts in words
onto the page
hoping to express
our personal rage
at the inhumanity
of mankind

cancellation of fireworks…

i asked
the brown bag prophet
if it
bothered him
that
the city
had
cancelled
the annual fireworks
he
said
ain’t nothing
to
celebrate
this
fourth of july
won’t even
make
a good wake
for
a dying nation
a nation
with
an ever growing
body bag
count
bagging up
blacks
and
browns
those grown
and
those
who’ll
never
get to grow
shot dead
as they read
what a great nation we are
should have read
we were
and
when we’re done
bagging up
the nra’s
school lunches
we’ll starting
filling up the bags
with
botched abortions
or
young mothers
who died
giving birth
to
a child
demanded by
and
abandoned by
good christians
protecting
a moral code
written
on rice paper
promoted
by
demigods
of
greed
so please
don’t ask me why
i’m
not celebrating
or
upset
about
cancelling
a fantasy freedom event

the dark circles

the reason
for
hopes demise
another
child
lies dead

you
continue
to deny
your part
in
this crime
as well
as those
that have
proceeded
this murder
you
continue
like
some rabid dog
to foam
at the mouth
with
formulaic
justifications
so
the slaughters
unabated
move
from
state to state
while
you
promise
to do
everything
within your powers
to
remedy
the problem
except
to deal
with
the real
issues
but
you offer
your
sincerest
condolences
along
with
your prayers
to
a god
you do not
even
believe in

some kind
of
form
he was concentrating
so hard
that
i
startled him
when
i asked
what
he was doing
once
he recovered
he said
i’m filling out
a tax-exempt organization complaint form
against
the
nra
for
any group
that
supports
directly
or
indirectly
the killing
of
our nation’s
children
needs
to be removed
from
the non-profit
tax exempt
category
along
with the removal
of all
those in government
that
support
the nra’s
assisted-murder programs
