10 to 6…

10 to 6

clock’s been locked
in that position for years
thought about rewinding it again
but it always stops at the same spot
like the history of racial freedom

this too shall pass…

this too shall pass

now
don’t take
this
personally
but
all your hopes and expectations
have
no foundation
in history
quite to the contrary
history suggests
that
your optimism
mirrors that
of
those
whose graves
we stand beside today

in due time…

those eyes
you
will not
stare into
for fear
they’ll see
that
your strength
is nothing
but
weakness
will soon
pierce
your façade
stripping you
naked
for those already
laid bare
will want
the same
for
you

legal injustice …

pair of old work boots
sold as if they were brand new
like promised freedom
but boots have structural flaws
they don’t have any bootstraps

the oppressed…

you can’t hear my thoughts
though they are quite deafening
nor chose to see me
but there’s centuries of wrath
staring at your eyes beware

4th of july flashback…

all the dictators
are having parades with tanks
our tiananmen square

climate change too…

if the venom
from
their mouths
sends
spirals
of
hateful spray
into
the face
of
your day
honey
just
live with it
live with it
as
they have lived
with
the degradation
of
just being
born
born
to
live out
that
prayerful motto
there
for
the grace
of
god
go i
they’re
the folks
on
the world’s
lowest
social rungs
called
by
many names
but
each name
is
anchored
in
fear
the fear
that
one day
they’ll
say
no more
and
just
leave
leaving
you
on
the
lowest rung

long remembered…

they died as martyrs
cameras recorded their deaths
crowds chanted praises
promising not to forget
but death’s fear clears one’s memory

conflict classroom…

conflict classroom

war
is to teach
the young
that they
should
keep their eyes down
focused on
blood soaked ground
a slave master’s lesson
where
youths
are taught
to assume
the submissive posture
a posture
that reflects
a level of control
where the soul is emptied
of all life
leaving
a hollow body
to be filled
with fear
and
terror
or
hate
that’s
what
war
teaches
