verifying

faith
within one’s mind
and

could it be
personally
verified
needless to say
at the close
of
the course
she was
bewildered
and
at a loss
to make sense
of
the world around her
now
some thought her
naive
but
from faith
to
freedom
we’re all
just like her
accepting
the national infomercials
as more than
they are
we live lives
based on
misinformation
and
carefully contrived lies 
and
when
we
finally realize
the scam
that’s been
played on us
we all
end up
just
like

resembling
the spanish inquisition
i fully expect
that
we’ll soon
have
the great
teachers witch trials
complete
with
teachers
firmly tied
to
tetherball poles
surrounded

of burning
banned books
books
banned
for their
revealing the truth
about our
illustrious forefathers
you know
the ones
that massacred
native americans
and
enslaved others
for purely
selfish reasons
their own
financial gain
and
unfettered power
lord knows
we can’t have children
knowing the truth

might hurt

feel guilty

limiting
how many of them

in

scars are deeply embedded
into the nation’s body
what’s most upsetting
is it appears that gangrene’s
in the nation’s mind
those once thought to be insane
now are heralded as leaders
surely this maddness
is a harbinger of death
the death of freedom
and of all our aspirations
