i wish I had the right words…

words
litter
the graveyard
insincere
candy wrapper phrases
tossed
upon
the
headstones
with
those
laser etched designs
and
preset
engraved
catalogued
expressed emotions
which
when
properly applied
provide
such
a hand finished look
and
of course
the appropriate
level
of
family
love
and
bereavement

empty shell…

words
from
the altar
life after death
images
of
an egyptian pharaoh
sailing
to
the afterlife
aboard
a
felucca
following
embalming
and
funeral festivities
but
burial goods
acquired
during life
and
necessary after death
according
to scripture
have been updated
for
today’s
funeral procession participants
burial goods
are kept
at
a bare minimum
just
the shirt on the back
and
a one-time
favorite
black suit
or
dress
is
deemed
all that’s necessary
the rest
are the spoils
of
government
and
suddenly
concerned family members
of
the
dearly
departed
members
of
life’s invisible family
now
shedding
copious
and
very visible tears
during
the
funerary text
salty secretion
most likely
due
to
indigestion
from
airport food
cheap sustenance
ingested
during
the trip
to claim
some
share
of
the postmortem booty
but
with
slumped silhouettes
and
carefully staged tears
these
family members
engender
words
of
comfort
from
naive observers
and
men
of
organized gods
parish soothsayers
also seeking
a portion
of
death’s plunder
but
alas
there
was
a trust
providing
as little as the law allows
to
each
pandering predator
in
the pews
the
rest
to charity
the grave robbers
have
arrived
too late

need-to-know basis…

aunt bea
was
sitting
on her back porch
when
i heard
her say
lord
lord
lord
these folks
sure
got their nerve
when
i asked
what was wrong
she
said
these funeral parlors
keep
sending me notices
about
how
i can save family members
the inconvenience
of
disposing
of
my corpse
by
prepaying them
for
services
to be rendered
at
some date in the future
she said
now
i’m not opposed
to
helping family out
but
the frequency
and
urgency
of
these mailings
is
starting
to make me wonder
if
they know
something
i
don’t

funeral arrangements…

there will be no more graves
there are
far too many bodies
to
bury
and
burning
seems
unreasonable
with
our air quality
just as
shooting them
into
space
is not an option
hell
we already
have
more than enough
space junk
to
come
raining down
upon us
it
really
just leaves us
with
chemical baths
to
dissolve
the dear ones
there will of course
be
the legal battles
to
fight
with
environmentalists
who will claim
mankind
will be harmed
by
the residue
in
the water supply
and
then they will offer
the
absurd proposal
that
we
stop
war
