when winter comes…

when time
has
stopped
and
you and i
have begun
to stare
into the night
of existence
will
you
call out
though in vain
for
one
more hour
just
to feel
the warmth
of our embrace
beneath
the comforter
of love
or
merely smile
for all
the kisses
along
your
spine

musical trance…

during the performance
she stared
out of the corners
of her eyes
into the past
when her lover
was beside her
in a gentle embrace
one of quiet acceptance
of death’s presence
in the room
her hand now
reached for the wine
as the piano solo
pulled her back
to this night
but
only briefly
for the veil
of yesterday
blurred this moment
and her view
returned to that embrace
and
from the corners
of her eyes
tears
reached towards
her heart

in dark conscious…

Challenge Photo IV from Jade

yesterday’s tears
are now morning’s fog
distorting my perceptions
confusing the mental
landmarks of my sanity
i deceive myself
a trance so tranquil
that i am blind
to my own blindness
my thoughts move slowly
suspended in the fog
a blurred rationality
but a desire to feel whole
not some fragment of myself
i am a child
crying out for comfort
but there is none
to be found
and while you embrace
another warm thought
of how you shall
revive my sanity
i listen carefully
to your words
moving without sound
through the air
and
i agree
to whatever you have said
knowing only that i
am lost in the darkness

This poem represents my fourth response to  the second challenge series between Jade and I.  As you may recall, each poet provides the other with a series of photos, visual prompts,  from which the poet is to write a poem.  Jade has written her response which can be found here

from my window…

from my window
i see a world
you do not see
i see madmen
in the street
selling candy-coated nightmares
on corporate auction blocks
for the mere price of your soul
and hear the sounds
streaming from city streets
that go unheard
when children cry
in the night
with parental fright
praying for morning’s light
to embrace the sight
of an unlocked door
into a world most fear
you did not hear
the shallow breaths of fear
throughout the night
reverberating
like waves of tears
an unwanted
endowment
nor did you feel
the touch of love
that a poet knows
sometimes in dreams
sometimes savored
on passion’s bed
in a candle lit room
a love
you
have always
sought
and
have not
found

My friend Toni Cross has presented another challenge photograph for me, but his one is very special since it is a photograph of her…how does one poet begin to capture even a fragment of another poet’s spirit within the lines of a poem?  Not sure that I have an answer…but here is my attempt to convey a some small portion of the spirit that I have seen in her writing.  I hope that she will approve of what I have attempted.

portrait of a sleeping child…

prayers complete
deep breaths
eyelids flutter
no need for me to wait
except to stare
into the day that was
there are no fears here
no tears
just a child
resting within the arms of  love
no time but now
who shall ever believe
that such peace is real
close your eyes
recall those days
without fears
without tears
i am here
next to you
can you hear me
the nightlight’s on
gentle touch of yesterday
when love was real
got no need for what will be
just a caress of how it was
reaching for stars
a child’s embrace
do you recall the night’s touch
like a hand so small
so warm with hesitation
without bad dreams
or fears of tomorrow
walk slowly
to the doorway
as not to miss the moment
walk away
but look back
inside there is a need
not addressed
good night my friend
my love
my child
good night

tree house…

the leaves
like some broken patchwork
permitted light
to touch his face
forming shadows
of fine black lace
which caused the sun to wink at him
through these portholes
he saw the sky
the endless sea
of dreams untold
where clouds
were knights
and dragons bold
where he a boy could fly each day
but then
all too very soon
the night had cast
it’s spell on time
and from his tree
he had to climb
downward
towards his fate with men
unable is he
to climb that tree
which led to dreams
that are untold
for now it’s limbs
refuse to hold
the boyish man
who tries to climb
now another
will climb his tree
permitting light
to touch his face
and from the sky
a dream embrace
before the night
can cast it’s spell
