so you think you can dance…

she carefully
carved away
what was left
of his pride
from
fossilized memories
of love
and
romance
leaving him
standing alone
on the dance floor
under garish lights
while
she
finished her drink
by flickering candlelight
listening to ocean waves
in the comfort
of
his home
with
the doors
locked

container…

walls
stainless steel
no ambient light
penetrating this space
no reason
for sound
to be made
this is not
a place for
conversations
or
negotiations
it is not for
you
or
your civilized friends
that constantly make war
under the flag of peace
this is
a shelter
from
your society
a self-contained environment
designed to maintain
sanity
it is the shelter
of my heart
and
the doors
are locked

waiting…

isolated fears
outline
the edge of hope
holding back
expectations
and
dreams
like a dam
ready to burst
but no one
hears
the roar
of desperation
flowing rapidly
outside their doors
they’re
too busy
talking about
how their
prayers go
unanswered
so they drown
in their own misery
while waiting
for what
has come
and gone

unavoidable…

with every breath
you take
world suffering
fills your being
there is
no hiding place
the shots fired
piercing the flesh
of your love one
pouring
hot molten misery
into your veins
even behind
your locked doors
of indifference
came from the hand
of human suffering
there is
no hiding place
though you divert
your eyes
from the tortured souls
that spot your city’s streets
you cannot sweep away
their image in your mind
that fosters the fear
that keeps your
doors locked and barred
making every sound
in the night
reverberate loudly
causing you to sweat
and toss from side to side
inside your sheltered enclave
of denial
there is
no hiding place
like the quaking of the earth
human suffering cannot be ignored
it moves the very foundation
of every world community
its frigid winds
swirl into your life
finding you
as easily
as death

Point-Counter Point Challenge:  For those of you have been following the challenges between Jade and I, you are aware that several challenges have taken place over the course of the last few months.  This time, the challenge was to be initiated by me and I decided to change the rules a little…well a lot.  Here’s how it works this time.  Each poet provides the other poet with  five quotations that must be addressed from the opposite point of view as the original quote. Here is the fourth quote that Jade provided to me:  “You can hold yourself back from the sufferings of the world, that is something you are free to do and it accords with your nature, but perhaps this very holding back is the one suffering you could avoid.” – Franz Kafka

shadow gypsies…

shadow gypsies
seeking asylum
from war’s certain death
walk among you
but you do not see
the scars of fear
nor the tracings of tears
tattooed upon their faces
you see only a threat
national security
job security
your way of life security
    a distorted image
    built upon a glowing self-worth
these gypsies
the walking dead
have left their graves
to find the fountain of freedom
written about in legend
a fable of true humanity
a legend you believed
but that was before so many wars
so many gypsies
seeking asylum
on
your shores
pleading outside
your doors
for one morsel of kindness
so now you see only
a beggar
not the father
not the son
nor holy ghost of humanity
just lumps
excreted from the bowels
of war
you slam
your doors
screaming at the top of
your lungs
that they should
go
back to
their
graves
for they
are already
dug
