all rise…

encamped
near
the i 5 freeway
beneath
an on-ramp
you’ll find
the honorable
former
sergeant major
veteran
of
three
official wars
and
two or three
military
conflicts
tours
of
duty
have
left him
missing in action
in
his own life
and
deserted
by
the nation
he
proudly served
now
his body
is embedded
with
human shrapnel
fragments
of
memories
of

those
bloodied bodies
the smells
and
sounds
of
death
that
pierce
deep
into his soul
so now
he staggers
on
a new battlefield
an
ignored warrior
reclassified
by
society
as
a vagrant
someone
unwilling
to
participate
meaningfully
in
society
in a society
that
has given him
their disdain
while
praising
a commander and chief
that
slithered
beneath the slime
of lies
to avoid
even
the slightest sight
of
blood
especially
his own

  1. In talking with many of our veterans on the streets at the Union Rescue Mission and Lord’s Diner, their lifestyle is a choice. They do not wish to change it even given the choice, something for me difficult to understand. As for commander in chief, it is a wait game until a change can be made, thru the years there have been many waiting times. We vote, we wait, we see, process all over again thru the years

    • It is hard to understand but sometimes our choices are determined (or restricted) by our internal scars and demons. It seems that so many people returning from war have so many behavioral disorders (PTSD) that living within meaningful relationships become an impossible option. Internal scars can require us to build very high and thick walls around us. Politically I, too, am playing the waiting game hoping an end comes sooner than later before damage done is difficult to repair.
