what did you expect…

are you
still
waving the flag
pretending
that those
who
orchestrate
positions
in
the american caste system
will
afford you
your long-awaited
opportunity
for
true freedom
here’s a news flash jack
you’re
gonna have to
climb over
the piles of black bodies
that
proceeded your
fine fantasy
starting
your
first
ascent
over
the bodies
of
african slaves
mired
in the promises
of
a mule and forty acres
trying not to trip
as you climb
on the bodies
that sought
freedom
through
service
during america’s
unending
wars
with
someone
the layers
of such bodies
are impossible
to
list
since some
were
open love affairs
while
others were
secret
like
unsanctioned lovers
meeting
in
a dark movie theater
but
i’m rambling now
so
i shall wish you
the best of luck
and
suggest
that you watch
where
you step

  2. this poem comes at a time when we in Holland remember the dead from the second world war and celebrate our fragile freedom from war and tyranny.
