arctic fishermen…

arctic fishermen

lines in the ice
earth’s varicose veins
veins
revealed
with winter’s chill
frozen flaws
that
fill the surface
of the pond
we stare
below
into its depths
staying
as stationary
as possible
given
our need to move
and
stay warm
waiting
for fish to pass by
our hand carved portals
and
grasp the bait
but
with each of our sighs
hope dies
for such an event
there is
no sight of them
and
so we head home
with empty sleighs
weighing more now
than
when we left this morning
even youth has it limits
when winter’s breath
is all you catch

  1. i never did ice fishing but i can imagine how chilling and tiring it is – esp. when you don’t catch much…. a good metaphor for some things in life as well
