making soup from bones…

Making Soup From Bones

as i picked up
the groceries
for thanksgiving
the brown bag prophet
said
as i hurried
to my car
now don’t you find
it interesting
that on this day
of
thanksgiving
when the descendants
of the pilgrims
will eat
736 million pounds
of turkey
that the very people
that made it possible
for them to be
survivors
in the first place
will have
50 percent
of their
children
go to bed
hungry
not just today
but
everyday
now
ain’t that
something
to be
thankful
and
proud of

  1. The brown bag prophet thinks like me. I always think of the First Nations on Thanksgiving Day and their holocaust from the hands [and guns] of the colonizers of the ‘west’.

    written
    in blood ink
    history
    of how
    the west
    was won

  2. Well, Charles, your poem goes right to the heart of The Present for many children on the Pine Ridge, Cheyenne River, Standing Rock and other reservations in the here and now. If I’d have read it sooner I’d have used it for saying ‘grace’. It’s a few steps up on politeness from the standard. Thank you.
