i heard
the muted rustle
on dry paper
behind me
and turned
to see
the brown bag prophet
preparing for
his sunday sermon
on the college green
he said
here’s an ipo
for you
ring around
the collar
someone wants
your dollar
aspen
aspen
all fall down
a new nursery rhyme
more fitting
for our times
composed
without regret
to engender
your awareness
of unicorn-stocks
and vapor-bonds
printed
at will
and
with whim
according to the book
of greed
no need
to sing along
the rhyme’s
all ready
in your mind
just
try
to free this tune
from your head
ignore all
the commercial signs
as you crawl into bed
ring around
the collar
someone wants
your dollar
aspen
aspen
all fall down
IPO’s pull out your dollars and push them into the drain.
I really like this poem… and, your reading really brings it all together…

true words from the prophet who knows the world.
smiled at the new nursery rhyme…love both, the humor and sharpness of this charles
You have some very interesting advisers. 😉
“uncorn-stocks” …well said.
Great stuff. All my money’s in hippogriff derivatives.
Interesting spin on so called “nursery rhymes”—aspen instead of “ashes”–we all fall down. Economic disease replacing the bubonic plague.
Very appropriate.
“Here we go round the prickly pear” a bit of T.S. in this.
