a common affliction…

digital decoupage cwmartin 2011

i guess
i’m like
everyone else
this time of year
reviewing
analyzing
and
bemoaning
aspects
of my life
an array of
year-end thoughts
guess
aunt bea
picked up
on that
she said
it’s so easy
to compare
your life
to others
sipping
that bitter wine
of yesterday’s dreams
wondering
why
certain things
happened
trying
to give
divine meaning
to
random events
thinking
that logic
should’ve
solved
your problems
but
honey
it’s an illogical world
and
those
you envy
are just
parking lot attendants
driving
someone else’s
car

think i gonna copy this and hang it in big letters above my desk..too much analyzing just leads us nowhere..and of course, aunt bea knows..

  2. Wow, Charles, great way to start my day. The final metaphor is stunning. Your Aunt Bea character is truly a conduit to some amazing perspectives, gentled in with a bit of humor. Great write, my friend!

  3. What a wonderful message. I really like the analogy you have given in the last few lines. When I was a kid I was always told it was bad to keep up with the Jones’, this seems to be the next step in that ideology.

  4. There is so much truth to this fabulous poem. We do dwell on things at this time of year and thank goodness we have Aunt Bea to keep things in perspective. Aunt Bea should have her own talk show!

  5. “nothing but parking lot attendants”
seriously… they come in and out, their here their not…
out of sight… out of mind…

great write… always killing me softly in the endings…
